Community-based delivery for adult patients.
Service Overview
This service provides intravenous iron infusions for adult patients with confirmed iron deficiency where oral iron is ineffective, not tolerated or clinically inappropriate. Care is delivered in a governed community setting by NMC-registered nurses working under medical oversight, with full monitoring and a structured discharge process.
Patient Pathway
- 1.Referral received from GP or consultant
- 2.Clinical triage against eligibility criteria
- 3.Appointment scheduled in a community clinic
- 4.IV iron infusion with monitoring and observation
- 5.Treatment summary returned to the referrer
What We Do Not Provide

- • Management of acute or unstable patients
- • Ongoing haematology care
This service delivers infusion therapy only. The referrer retains responsibility for overall clinical management.

Clinical Indications
Indications for Referral
- • Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) confirmed by blood tests
- • Functional iron deficiency in chronic disease states
- • Iron deficiency where oral iron is ineffective or poorly tolerated
- • Pre-operative optimisation where iron deficiency is present
- • Post-partum iron deficiency
Eligibility Criteria
- • Aged ≥18 years
- • Referred by NHS GP, Consultant or approved pathway
- • Confirmed iron deficiency (Ferritin, Hb, Transferrin saturation)
- • Medically stable and appropriate for community treatment
- • Able to provide informed consent
